Know the Ocularist..

Hello!!! This is my first attempt at writing something. I’ve always liked reading and I thought I should also try and give writing a try. So here I am. Now to think about what to write? So I thought I’ll try and start with an easy topic-my profession. By profession an Ocularist. Now what or who is an Ocularist? A lay-man does not understand our profession on hearing the term “Ocularist”, so in lay man language, a person who makes custom artificial eyes for one- eyed patients is called an Ocularist. We take the measurement of the patient’s empty/affected eye socket and duplicate it into an acrylic artificial eye and paint/color it according to the other eye to give a similar and natural appearance to the eye. The advantage of this technique is that we are able to provide best possible cosmosis for the patients thus improving the facial asymmetry and one’s appearance. The disadvantage of this is that it cannot restore vision that is lost. It is very important to understand that an artificial eye is worn just to improve the cosmosis or outward appearance but it is artificial not real and thus one cannot see with it. But with all these years of practicing I can tell one thing with confidence, that once the outward appearance improves, patients eventually tend to got so happy with the prosthesis that they are able to live a normal and regular life without any hindrance. So in short, our work is to improve the lifestyle of one-eyed patients by helping them lead one. I consider my job a very satisfying one and at the end of the day one smile on someone else’s face just makes me even more happier.
